Students attending the workshop will learn about concepts to form traditional landscape drawings, including the use of atmospheric perspective. They will be shown, through demonstration and examination of reference artworks, how variation in the depth of detail and tone applied creates depth. This project will involve an introduction to techniques, the initial landscape sketch, and the application of loose, light tone in the background; followed by a focus on increasing tone and detail towards the landscape foreground. Participants can expect to learn:

  • Atmospheric perspective

  • Drawing with a variety of graphite pencil weights

  • Using drawing tools and techniques such as paper stumps, erasure and hatching.

  • Perceiving and replicating depth in a landscape through drawing.

Participants take home: One graphite illustration on A3 sized paper
